Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions for strengthening skills, training, and career development of researchers

One of the specific objectives pursued within Component I ("Scientific Excellence") of the specific program for implementing the Horizon 2020 Framework Program for Research and Innovation is to strengthen skills, training, and career development of researchers through the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions ("Marie Curie Actions").

The Marie Curie Actions are open for training and career development activities in all fields of research and innovation, from basic research to market uptake and innovation services. The fields of research and innovation, as well as the sectors, will be freely chosen by the applicants.

In all the activities described above, special attention will be given to encouraging the participation of businesses, especially SMEs, as well as other socio-economic actors. All Marie Curie Actions promote long-term collaboration between higher education institutions, research organizations, and the private sector, taking into account the respect for intellectual property rights.

Mobility is a key requirement in the Marie Curie Actions. Researchers thus have the opportunity to gain experience abroad and complement their training with skills or disciplines useful for their own careers.

The Marie Curie Actions will be open to the participation of researchers and innovation staff, as well as universities, research institutes, businesses, and other socio-economic agents from all European Union countries, including third countries.

The principles of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers, which promote open recruitment and attractive working conditions, will need to be endorsed and applied by all participants benefiting from funding.

The four major funding directions through the Marie Curie Actions will be as follows:

1. Innovative networks for supporting early-stage researchers (aims at the initial training of researchers and doctoral candidates from member states and associated countries, through support for research training programs selected through competition at the Union level, carried out by partnerships between universities, research institutes, businesses, SMEs, and other socio-economic agents from different countries in Europe and beyond).

2. Individual fellowships for supporting experienced researchers (cultivating excellence through cross-border and inter-sectoral mobility)

3. International and inter-sectoral cooperation through research and innovation staff exchange (aiming to stimulate innovation through cross-cutting knowledge exchanges)

4. Co-funding of regional, national, and international doctoral and postdoctoral programs (aiming to increase structural impact through co-funding activities).
