Tradition and academic excellence

Located in the west of Romania, in the heart of the fertile Banat Plain, the University of Life Sciences "King Michael I" of Timișoara is one of the reference institutions in higher agricultural education and life sciences. With a history of over 80 years and deep roots in the agro-food education tradition of the region, the university has constantly evolved, adapting to the demands of a world in continuous transformation.

Tradition and academic excellence

The university was established in 1945, through Law 617, promulgated by King Michael I of Romania, marking the official beginning of organized agricultural education in Timișoara. This decision came in the context of a strong need for training specialists in the field of agriculture, during a period when Romania was redefining its economic and social structure. Over the decades, the university has carried several names, reflecting the transformations in society and the expansion of fields of study – from the University of Agricultural Sciences of Banat to the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Banat, and currently, the University of Life Sciences “King Michael I” of Timișoara.

The tradition of training in the agricultural field in Banat is, however, older. Since the 18th century, after the region was liberated from Ottoman occupation, the foundations of a modern land administration were laid, and irrigation, drainage, and modernization of agricultural production works were initiated. In 1799, the first school of agronomy was established in Sânnicolau Mare, followed by other similar initiatives in Lugoj and other areas of the region. Banat, with its chernozem soils, natural resources, and strategic position, thus became a true laboratory for the development of agriculture and the sciences associated with it.
