Emeritus Professor Dr. Eng. Ionel-Vasile Jianu marked, with passion and dedication, the evolution of higher food education in Romania. Through his academic, scientific, and managerial activity, he infused energy and inspiration into the development of a university tradition that proudly defines the identity of the current Faculty of Food Engineering in Timișoara.
In 1995, he established the Faculty of Agro-Food Products Technology within the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Banat in Timișoara, becoming the second food profile faculty created in Romania. This moment inaugurated a new stage in the advancement of food education and research in the western part of the country and laid the foundation for the Banat Higher School of Food.
As founder and the first dean of the faculty, he outlined the fundamental academic and institutional directions for its development. He stimulated the formation of a solid teaching staff, the expansion of educational infrastructure, and the integration of the faculty into European academic networks, supporting the consolidation of a university center recognized for excellence in food engineering and technology.
His scientific activity materialized in the publication of 33 books, over 200 scientific papers, and 20 invention patents, many of which were awarded at national and international levels. A member of the Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences "Gheorghe Ionescu-Șișești", Emeritus Professor Dr. Eng. Ionel-Vasile Jianu advocated for the idea of research as an essential pillar of university development and the progress of the food industry.
Perhaps his greatest achievement remains, however, the generation of specialists, researchers, and teaching staff that he trained with dedication and deep involvement. Many of his graduates, doctoral students, and collaborators today hold leadership positions in universities, research institutes, and companies in the food industry, carrying forward not only the professional values he consistently cultivated but also his innovative spirit, which marked their destinies and instilled in them the courage to excel. Emeritus Professor Dr. Eng. Ionel-Vasile Jianu left a lasting mark on higher food education in Romania by founding, in 1995, the Faculty of Agro-Food Products Technology and by developing the Banat Higher School of Food. The institution created under his leadership continues to train specialists, develop research, and contribute to the progress of the food industry, confirming the relevance and timeliness of his academic vision.
