HEI4S3-RM - EIT HEI Initiativeopens in a new tab
The Banat University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine "King Mihai I of Romania" from Timișoara announces - the selection of experts (JULY 2022 stage) within the project ”Building ecosystem Integration Labs at HEI to foster Smart Specialization and Innovation on Sustainable Raw Materials ” cod HEI4S3-RM
The University of Life Sciences "King Mihai I" from Timișoara is one of the Main Partners involved, alongside the associated partner Politehnica University of Timișoara, in the implementation of the HEI4S3 project - “Building Ecosystem Integration Labs at HEI to foster Smart Specialization and Innovation on Sustainable Raw Materials”, coordinated by the University of Oviedo.

Project Purpose
The project was created to strengthen innovation capacity in Europe, to achieve sustainable long-term development, applying the idea of the circular economy for the modernization of the extractive sectors and raw materials. The idea behind the circular economy is that the value of products, materials, and resources should be maintained in the economy for as long as possible, and waste generation should be minimized. Such activities make a significant contribution to the EU's efforts to develop a sustainable, low-carbon, resource-efficient, and competitive economy.
The project aims to strengthen partnerships between higher education, business, and research organizations by developing an innovative pathway for entrepreneurial universities.
HEI4S3-RM is implemented as an integral part of the EIT (European Institute of Innovation and Technology). HEI (Higher Education Institutions) represents a key objective of the EIT as part of its new strategy, the EIT Strategic Innovation Agenda for the period 2021 – 2027.
Methodology
The partners involved in the implementation process of the HEI4S3-RM project have key roles in their local and regional innovation ecosystems, being relevant promoters of the Regional Smart Specialization Strategy (RIS3) and most of them demonstrate significant research, development, and teaching capabilities to build and guide the knowledge bases for sustainable primary production, but also for the provision of related services. This highlights the importance of the role of regions and regional innovation ecosystems (Knowledge Triangle), which involves focusing the efforts of higher education institutions and other RDTs to achieve the broadening of the innovation culture, but also to teach innovation and entrepreneurship, thus encouraging the development of research and development capacities, as well as the expansion of open cooperation initiatives, aligned with the raw materials sector and the mining sector. To this end, HEI4S3-RM aims to build ecosystem integration labs at HEI to promote smart specialization and innovation in sustainable raw materials. Accessible, with favorable conditions (organizational, didactic, research, innovations, leadership innovations) included in the interdepartmental research conditions, cooperating within the consortium, between the Integrated Ecosystem Labs (EIL).
This includes the following activities:
– building ecosystem integration labs in each of the 6 partner universities, to support smart specialization and innovation in sustainable raw materials;
– promoting concrete actions, to develop a broader entrepreneurial culture, as well as didactic innovation and entrepreneurship in the academic environment;
– management of processes using governing boards by universities;
– building the capacity of specific multidisciplinary support structures that will be involved in managing the "HEI4S3-RM Innovation" process
– exchange of good practices between EU universities.
Challenges
The main challenge is represented by connecting universities with regional and local innovation ecosystems in the field of circular economy activities, in the raw materials and mining sectors. A specific interest group for students and another interest group for research, academic and non-university staff from higher education institutions will be created to ensure, monitor, and manage the target groups of the proposed Training Program that follows the training activities and will obtain specific certification, recognizing their participation in this EIT-HEI project. The key element is represented by the integration of scientific communities from different parts of Europe, as part of the common challenges related to the circular economy and adaptation to climate change that occur.
For whom?
The project is addressed to European higher education institutions, which, due to this initiative, can become regional engines of innovation and can support sustainable economic growth and create jobs throughout Europe.
